⚕️ Tip: Most hospitals provide disposable mesh underwear, pads, diapers, and basic wipes during your stay. Call your hospital to confirm exactly what they provide before you pack. Pack your bag by week 35–36, or week 32 for twin or high-risk pregnancies.

When Should I Pack My Hospital Bag?

Most midwives and OBs recommend having your bag ready by week 35–36 of pregnancy. For twin pregnancies or high-risk pregnancies, aim for week 32–34. Early labor can happen quickly — especially with second or third babies — so don't wait until you feel contractions to start packing.

How Many Bags Do I Need?

Many mothers find it helpful to use 2–3 separate bags:

  • Labor bag: Items for active labor — ID, birth plan, phone charger, lip balm, snacks, focal point
  • Postpartum bag: Your recovery essentials — toiletries, nursing bras, comfortable clothing, toiletries
  • Baby bag: Going-home outfit, car seat (installed in advance), swaddle blanket

What Do Hospitals Usually Provide?

Most hospitals provide these during your stay, so you don't need to pack them:

  • Hospital gown for labor and delivery
  • Disposable mesh underwear and heavy postpartum pads
  • Diapers and wipes for baby during the stay
  • Swaddle blankets and a hat for baby
  • Basic toiletries (though you may prefer your own)
  • Pain medication and IV fluids
  • Lactation consultant visit if breastfeeding

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I stay in the hospital after delivery?
Most vaginal deliveries result in a 1–2 day hospital stay. C-sections typically require 2–4 days. Pack enough for at least 3 days to be safe, especially if it's your first baby or you plan to have a C-section.
Can I bring my own food?
Policies vary by hospital. During active labor many hospitals allow light snacks but restrict heavier meals. Once you've delivered, you can usually eat what you like. Check with your hospital ahead of time.
Do I need to bring a car seat to the hospital?
Yes — hospitals in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia will not discharge your baby without a properly installed car seat. Get it installed and checked by a certified technician before your due date.
What should I wear during labor?
Most women wear the hospital gown — it makes monitoring, IVs, and an epidural much easier. If you prefer your own clothing, wear something loose, comfortable, and something you don't mind getting stained.
